The site of the first Sonrie prosthetic fabrication
clinic held in Belize was the automotive shop of a local technical school.
Since it was only available when school was not in session, teams were forced
to work during the hottest part of the Central American summer. In 2002, a
grateful patient allowed us to use a vacant house on the outskirts of Orange
Walk Town. We can now schedule quarterly clinics and begin providing the
continuity of care patients need. Project
Hope~Belize will
be the site of our permanent facility to be established in Belize. It will be
the first facility to offer prosthetic care on a year-round basis. It will
offer comfortable lab space, patient treatment area, and team housing.
Orthotic care and eye prosthetics will be offered in the near future. We have joined with the Belize Social
Security Board to provide care for participating patients who
normally were sent abroad for care. A reduced fee per BSSB patient enables us
to meet expenses for Project Hope~Belize. We also enjoy the support of local
business and community leaders and government ministers. In order to provide continuing maintenance and
follow-up care, local technicians are being trained to work with each Sonrie
team. Prosthetic patients can be assured of on-going care even when a Sonrie
team isn’t in town. Funding for Project Hope~Belize is being
solicited from corporations and individuals both in the U.S. and Belize ~ Joining together to build a BETTER FUTURE. |
